Georgetown Hoyas star Greg Monroe was selected with the seventh pick in the NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, after a season in which he was a first-team All-Big East performer. He brings immediate help to a Pistons team lacking productivity from their big men.
Monroe was widely viewed as the most skilled big man in the draft, possessing great skill in not only scoring but also passing and helping run an offense, no doubt skills he refined while running the Princeton offense under John Thompson III at Georgetown. He averaged 16.1 points and 9.7 rebounds during his sophomore and final season in Washington, D.C. ( Read More…)

Down seven points in the second half on the road to the Providence Friars, the Georgetown Hoyas looked headed to a second straight let-down-after-a-huge-win game.
But unlike against USF, where Dominique Jones led the Bulls to snap the Hoyas’ 11-game winning streak at the Verizon Center, no one on Providence could rally the Friars, while the Hoyas got back to running their offense and controlling the game with Greg Monroe, as they won 79-70 on Tuesday night.
“Road wins in this league are difficult to come by,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. “This was a game where things were not going well for us in a lot of different ways. We were extremely frustrated for large parts of that game. That’s because of Providence, that’s because of what they were doing, that’s because of their offensive execution and their defensive tenacity.”
Luckily, Monroe stepped up when it counted. After guard Jason Clark, who broke out for a career-high 24 points against Villanova, picked up three quick fouls in the second half, Monroe took over the facilitator role for Georgetown and started picking apart Providence.
Monroe finished with a most unusual double-double for a big man: one with points and assists. Monroe finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and 12 assists on the night.

Three days after rolling over at home against Dominique Jones and USF, the Georgetown Hoyas put the Villanova Wildcats on their backs early and never let up.
The Hoyas exploded offensively in a 103-90 win over the No.2 ranked Wildcats in front of a crowd of over 10,000, despite an “epic” snowstorm that dumped two feet of snow upon the nation’s capital.
Before the game, when Hoyas PG Chris Wright scored 10 points or less in a game, the Hoyas were 1-5 this year (15-0 when he scored in double-digits). He had become known as a bellwether for the Hoyas—his performance was largely indicative of whether or not they’d win or lose.
The Hoyas rocketed out to an early lead on the heels of sophomore guard Jason Clark’s career day. Clark knocked down all four of his three-point attempts in the first half (and six on the day) en route to 24 points, easily his best game in a Hoya uniform.
Clark’s explosion made up for Wright, who was saddled with his fourth foul with more than 15 minutes left and spent most of the second half on the bench. Wright fouled out with more than five minutes left, having only scored seven points, and the challenge was on for the Hoyas.
But Georgetown, who hadn’t let Villanova close their lead to single-digits, kept their foot on the throttle at the free throw line, knocking down 39 of 50 in the game to boost their lead.
Junior guard Austin Freeman led the Hoyas with 25 points (including two three-points), and Greg Monroe finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

The No. 7 Georgetown Hoyas could not hold onto a big first-half lead in a 73-56 loss to the No. 4 Syracuse Orange.
Georgetown stormed out of the gate, scoring the games first 14 points thanks to four three-pointers.
Three of those three-point shots came from guard Austin Freeman, and it looked like the Hoyas were poised for a big victory.
Things turned around in a hurry, and Georgetown found themselves trailing heading into the locker room.
Things didn’t get much better in the second half, as the Hoyas continued to miss shots and Syracuse pulled away.

The Georgetown Hoyas proved their toughness by going into Pittsburgh and knocking off the Panthers, 74-66.
The Panthers have knocked off a number of quality teams this year, but Georgetown made sure they wouldn’t be one of them.
The game went back and forth in the first half, with both teams ending up tied heading into halftime.
The Hoyas came out in the second half and took control of the game, and their outside shooting was a big reason they came away victorious.
Georgetown went 7-10 from behind the three-point line while the Panthers shot just 4-18. Both teams had 31 rebounds.

The No. 11 Georgetown Hoyas got off to a quick start and didn’t look back in an 85-73 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates.
Georgetown bounced back nicely and have no hangover from their dramatic, come-from-behind win over Connecticut over the weekend.
Sophomore guard Jason Clark emerged on the scene, scoring a career-high 20 points. Chris Wright led the team with 21 points while Austin Freeman added 16.
The Hoyas built a 14-point lead at halftime and managed to extend it to 19 before Seton Hall made a run.
With a win this weekend, the Hoyas stand a great chance of jumping into the top 10 for the first time since early last season.

Former Georgetown Hoyas forward DaJuan Summers has been one of the stories so far of the NBA’s Summer League. He is averaging a startling 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game through his first two games.
It is just two games of summer league play, so it’s not exactly a sign that Summers is on his way to NBA stardom. He also isn’t playing against any of the league’s top players. Still, it’s a good sign for a guy the Detroit Pistons essentially stole with a second round pick.

Former Georgetown Hoyas forward DaJuan Summers is still hoping to make his way into the NBA lottery portion of the draft.
Summers saw his stock soar heading into the 2008-2009 college basketball season, but the year did not go as planned. The forward did not put up the type of numbers everyone expected from him and his preseason top team did not even make the NCAA tournament.
Summers’ shooting ability and large frame have impressed scouts in pre-draft workouts, raising hope that his stock could be rising again.

The Georgetown Hoyas capped off a disappointing season for their big men’s sports after failing to make the NCAA lacrosse tournament. This comes on the heels of the basketball team going from a preseason top 10 squad to an early exist from the NIT.
The Hoyas simply didn’t have many marquee wins on their schedule, and their win-loss schedule is less than impressive. It’s tough to make it to the tournament in this area with so many competitive lacrosse schools, but it’s still disappointing for the Hoyas.

Disappointment can’t even begin to describe this past season for the Georgetown Hoyas, who began the year ranked as one of the top 10 teams in the entire country.
Many felt that the Hoyas early season struggles were simply the result of playing one of the absolute toughest schedules in the entire country and that the team would step it up once Big East play began. The team did not recover though, even when they seemed to gain a little momentum heading into the Big East tournament. Instead of winning a few games and possibly making the NCAA tournament, the Hoyas fell flat on their face in the first round. They then proceeded to get bounced early from the N.I.T.
Things aren’t looking all that much better for next season, especially with the news that star forward DaJuan Summers is heading to the NBA.
About the only bit of good news is that it appears as though center Greg Monroe will hold off on the NBA and return to school. He could certainly use another year or two of seasoning before heading to the pros.
